If you plan to visit Toronto, Canada this month, the GRACE KELLY - "From Movie Star to Princess" is an exhibition at the Toronto Museum which features many of her famous gown, artifacts, photos, film clips etc. The exhibition closes on January 22. When Prince Rainer proposed to Miss Kelly, he presented her with a 10.47 carat emerald cut engagement ring and when their daugher Caroline married in 1978, Princess Grace wore a 77.36 carat diamond tiara by Van Cleef and Arpels. Creating Unique Looks With Stacking Rings

The versatility of stacking rings is that you can mix and match these rings in so many different ways. The more rings you have, the more choices you have. Wear them all together, 2, 3, or 4 at a time. I love the way you can alternate the patterns. So for example, if you choose to wear 3 gemstone stacking rings, you can have 3 different looks by alternating the pattern of the rings--kind of like a puzzle ring.

With the 3 stone ring pictured, you can wear it as it is photographed, or put the two moonstones together and the mother-of-pearl in the front or back, wear the two moontones on their own or combine the mother of pearl with one of the moonstones.
Monday is one look, Tuesday another and so on. You can also wear them individually--one on every finger if you choose, or 1 on each hand.

Another unique way to wear them is with small thin or thick bands in-between and you can make one of the gemstones the focal ring. Wear them spaced apart for a gypsy look.

Since gemstones have different meanings, i.e. ruby - love, citrine - happiness, peridot - good cheer, many people give these rings as friendship rings too because of their sentimental value. You can also see mothers wearing them symbolizing the birthstones of their children.

If you can draw a little, then buy a good sketch pad and when a creative moment strikes you, fill that pad with shapes and textures. You may have bursts of ingenious creativity; use those moments passionately and let the creativity in you flow.

Carry a small notebook with you because you never known when a creative idea hits you—it can be a thought, image or a word.

Think of words that are associated with the theme or type of jewelry you wish to have designed. Descriptive words evoke images, patterns, shapes and shades. As an example, if you are a boater, the words associated with that are speed, nautical, adventurous, waves, compass and buoys. Key words that would describe a swimmer include wind, water, athletic, strength and endurance, movement, flowing and graceful. When you look at these words, you can visualize shapes, lines and textures which can be incorporated into your design.

If you are looking at designing an initial, name, or expression, look at various types of fonts, calligraphy books or sites that specialize with lettering styles.

When you are researching the area/subject that focuses on your jewelry, pull out detailed information, choosing only the most significant feature(s) so that as the design evolves, it becomes that much more exact and detailed. You have a starting point from which to begin; from there you can add, take away, substitute, analyze until it is the way you vision it.

It certainly helps when you know someone who can draw or is even a professional artist, as one of our customer’s sister-in-law is. Designing her ring and matching pendant was a breeze. Ciara knew exactly what she wanted. Her sister-in-law with her fine sketching pencils and artist pad started sketching as Ciara started describing in fine detail the design. As the design was beginning to evolve it became more and more refined as Ciara looked on and guided the “artist”. When the sketches were complete she took them to her jeweler and a few weeks later was elated to see the final outcome of her original design—her ring and pendant.

An artist can also recreate a piece from pictures that you have collected. It would probably make their job easier to see actual pictures. As you communicate what you vision from the various pictures, it becomes that much more focused and exact for the artist to create the desired piece of jewelry.

How often I have heard “I know in my imagination what I want, I can picture it, but I can’t get it down on paper”. This is a pretty common expression by consumers who desire to design a custom piece of jewelry for themselves. They try sketching and then when they hit a roadblock, get frustrated and give up all attempts at creating their dream jewel.

Well I have good news; you do not need to be an artist to be inspired. You need creative channels to inspire you towards the end result, which is your ideal custom design special piece.

So where do you begin? Where is the starting point?

Look through fashion and jewelry magazines. You may notice a certain setting that is exactly what you want, while in another publication, you may see the right shank—call it a mixed bag of designs or as my Hungarian background would say, “a good goulash”. In other words, you can see bits and pieces of features that appeal to you in certain pieces of jewelry that can then be executed into one design. I can tell you one thing, designing the specific piece is not done overnight, it can take weeks, months and even years.

As you begin to cut out pictures, store them in a scrap book or folder and as you come across more pictures just keep adding them to your collection. You may come across other designs that appeal and get you excited and as you continue to find more designs, you might choose to scrap others that you have collected previously.

If you don’t collect magazines, then your computer will be you next best source. As you find pieces, that you like, bookmark them or print them up. Let’s say you are interested in a sporty ring, Google, “sporty rings”, it will yield multitudes of pages which you can print up and collect.

Has your library card been gathering some dust? You will have a pleasant surprise when you visit your local library and see their collection of books on jewelry. You have to decide what style, type and era of jewelry you are looking for. If you want your jewelry to be inspired from a certain time period, you may explore books that focus on a certain genre or style, i.e. Modernistic, Art Deco or Victorian.

Carrying a small camera or your phone’s camera can often capture the right picture at the perfect moment. You may see a person wearing an extraordinary piece of jewelry, or you may pass a jewelry shop window and see a piece that attracts you—you can instantly capture it all with a single click. Your camera can also capture images of objects, animals, foliage, landscapes—anything that can inspire a shape, theme or color.

If you travel to different countries you can be influenced by their own jewelry designs. So many countries have their own distinctive design concepts—you will definitely want to capture those on film.

Designing Your Own Custom Jewelry

While most consumers will purchase a jewelry item at their local jewelry shop, or on-line, there are also consumers who choose to have their jewelry custom designed. While it is more convenient and less complicated to purchase a piece of jewelry from a nice selection within a showcase, those that choose to take the path for custom design know that they do not want a commercial piece of jewelry that can be seen on the average person.

Choosing to have a custom jewel piece made has significant meaning to the individual. As an example, we have recently made 3 identical family crest rings for one of our customers. The coat of arms emblem, which is carved from lapis lazuli, is from her husband’s family; and while Heidi proudly wears the ring on her pinky finger, she wanted her three grown children to wear a piece of their ancestral history. She plans to give these rings to her children for their upcoming birthdays this year.

For most connoisseurs of that 1-of-a-kind piece, their input into the design is very important; while others design the entire piece on their own. There is something to be said about a piece that you had significant creative influence in designing or co-designing with your jeweler. You know when you wear that piece that it truly is a part of you—it is as unique as your signature.

Check List for Maintenance of Your Rings

Rings that are set with claws and/or prongs, should checked annually as they can wear down with time and get broken which will result with a stone breaking or falling out of the mount. A jeweler can re-tip the prongs. Sometimes in our daily routines and activities whether at work or home, a ring can be knocked or hit against something which can damage the claw—-most of the time we are not even aware. I can tell you first hand, it happened to me—two of the claws in my engagement ring were bent sideways, when my hand accidentally hit a wall. I could hear a distinct rattling sound because the diamond was loose in the setting.

If you wear your rings quite frequently and if the shanks are thin, they can wear out and snap off your finger. A jeweler can rebuild a new shank for you by making your exsisting shank wider and thicker or make a completely new shank.

Are you aware that soaps, shampoos, powders and lotions can build up a lot of residue and leave a filmy build-up under and around a setting? This would reduce the brilliance of a diamond or the brightness or intensity of a colored gemstone.

Most people enjoy outdoor activities—whether its sports or chores. However, these can also cause havoc for your jewelry. As an example, if you are an avid gardener, and like most people, you want to feel the soil and avoid wearing gardening gloves, you risk losing your rings as they could slip off your fingers. Also, dirt could be embedded within the setting and the stones could possibly get chipped.

Try to keep your rings in small plastic bags—they look like mini Ziploc bags and are avilable in craft/dollar stores.or their original ring box. This will prevent your rings from scratching against each other.

At home care for your rings requires minimal time and is so simple. By cleaning them on a weekly basis they will continue to sparkle and shine.

TIPS FOR BUYER AWARENESS WHEN PURCHASING JEWELRY DURING YOUR TRAVELS

You have heard the expression "buyer beware". When you are on vacation and venture out to shop, especially for jewelry, there are a few key things that you need to be aware of in order to make sure that you are safe and that you are not being ripped off or conned when purchasing a piece of jewelry.

1.Purchasing from a street/beach vendor does not guarantee that you are going to get a "bargain" in some cases people have paid much more from these vendors than if they would have purchased it from a reputable store. Also, there is no guarantee that the item is genuine. Sterling silver can be stamped 925, but could be metal. Also, the gemstone could be a simulated stone.

2.Do purchase your jewelry from a reputable store that has a return policy for merchandise that can be returned in a reasonable amount of time for a full refund, not a store credit if you are not satisfied with it.

3.Be aware of "deals". If the price is too good, be cautious.

4.When entering a jewelry shop make sure that no one follows you in or follows you out.

5.Never shop alone.

6.When making a purchase, especially an expensive piece, don't put it on to wear out of the store. You do not need to draw attention to yourself.

7.Be a good negotiator. Try to get the best bang for your buck. Even the finest jewelry shop will have some flexibility in price.

There are so many tourists that travel to destinations that are known for their beautiful beaches and 5 star hotels, but the citizens are dirt poor. You need to be very careful when shopping to insure your safety.

Tips for Insuring Your Jewelry

A standard homeowner’s policy will provide a limited amount of coverage up to a specified dollar amount as stated in your homeowner’s policy. Some losses may not be covered and that is why it is advisable to purchase additional coverage, also known as a floater.

When purchasing the extra floater insurance, an updated appraisal certificate and pictures of your jewelry will be required so the insurance company has them on file. The floater would cover those pieces if they would be lost, stolen, or in some cases, if you lose a stone, they would be covered under this policy.

It is very important that your jewelry is appraised by a certified appraiser. An appraisal certificate will outline all the details of the item, i.e. size of stone, karat of gold, weight, type of metal, unique features, current market value. It is also recommended to have the appraised pieces updated every 2-3 years because of the fluctuations in the gold market.

If your ring was insured for $6,500.00, and the insurance company can have it replaced for $5,500, you have the option to have their jeweler replace your ring or you could choose to have your own jeweler replace your piece. In the latter case, the insurance company would pay you out, also known as cash-out on the actual value—in this case you would receive $5,500—less your deductible, if applicable.

With regard to antique jewelry, which would be difficult to replace, the appraisal certificate would provide all the details and it would be based on the replacement value. You would receive a cash settlement.

Please note, this is a very GENERAL OVERVIEW and may not apply to your own specific insurer. I strongly recommend that you contact your individual agent to determine your insurance company’s specific policies with regards to insuring jewelry.

SLIDE BRACELETS - A PIECE OF WEARABLE HISTORY

There are specific types of jewelry that have historical significance as well as reflecting your own personal history. As one example, a charm bracelet, with its lifetime collection of charms can reveal quite a bit about you. Another type, which dates as far as the Victorian era, is the slide bracelet.

During the 19th century, women in England wore them as a fashion accessory. Since wrist watches were not created at that time, they wore heavy watches, often referred to as heavy hunting case watches, on a necklace. They added decorative “slides” to their chains which were placed under the watch that allowed them to shorten or lengthen the necklace by moving the slides up or down as well. Also, the slides prevented the watch from twisting and turning on the chain.

Women used to collect a variety of slides to match what they wore. Many of the slides were designed from old watch fobs that were engraved; others were set with gemstones and were very ornate. Other unique slides that were collected included stick pin heads that would be mounted on plain slides. Lucky for these ladies if there were a lot of men in their family who would give them their stick pins!

During the 1930’s, after the Victorian period, the watch slide became a very popular family heirloom. The 6-9 slides that were interchanged on a necklace were now being used to create a functional piece of jewelry; firstly as a time piece, but also as a fashionable bracelet. I am sure that most ladies never forgot to put on their watches, especially such exquisite pieces of wearable art. Very successful business men would reflect their affluence with the amount of jewelry that their wives wore and some ladies also wore slide bracelets on one arm and a watch slide on the other.

A slide bracelet is comprised of a double chain or cable bangle on to which a slide is placed. Slides have four drilled holes (two at both ends) so that the chain or cable can slide through. Many vintage slides had a small piece of cork placed within to hold it in place on the chain. Today, they are held in place with spacers such as beads that are placed between each slide.

Outsmarting a Potential Home Invading Jewelry Thief - Part 2

Thre are several things you can still do at home to outsmart a jewel thief .Other “home-remedy” solutions would be to place your jewelry in Ziploc bags and hide them under sheets, towels, decorative zippered pillows, rolled into your socks. You can also store your jewels in the bottom of a bin that holds seasonal clothes, Christmas decorations and craft supplies. Tennis anyone….by cutting a slit into a tennis ball and squeezing it open you can place small items in. Your children’s stuffed animals are another less conspicuous place—simply open a seam, slide your jewelry in and re-stitch.

Be sure to keep a list of where your jewelry is hidden and in what. In the worst case scenario, if a thief is clever enough to figure out a decoy’s spot, remember, time is not in his favor, so he would grab and run perhaps with only 1 piece of jewelry rather than your entire lifetime collection.

Many people invest in actual safes—keep in mind that a small safe that can hide in a closet is portable and can easily be carried away. A larger safe is very heavy, and while it can’t be carried away, they are harder to hide and take up a lot of space.

I personally favor safes that have a drilled space in a floor—a.k.a. floor safes. They are not portable, they are hidden and you can cover them. Ideally, they are located in basements because they can be drilled through concrete. These safes are smaller than your average wall or full standing safe, but they cannot be carried away, they are out of visual sight and therefore, concealed from a potential thief.

Many people have home alarm systems and while there are no guarantees that your home would not be burglarized, it could deter from a potential home invasion since signs are posted on windows or doors. However, if a burglar broke into a home, he would only have 2-3 minutes to find the valuables before the police would show up. If they would come across a safe, they wouldn’t have the time to open it, nor the time to ransack a home to find jewelry, if they are hidden out of sight.

With these suggestions in mind, I sincerely hope that your favorite and cherished jewels are safe for your enjoyment for many years to come.

How to Outsmart A Potential Home-Invading Jewelry Thief - Part 1

How well is your jewelry hidden at home? Do you have hiding places? The most obvious place for a thief to find your jewelry in your home is your bedroom, namely in your jewelry box located on top of your dresser.

Try to hide your jewelry throughout your home in various locations. There are unique “props” also known as gimmick gadgets that are made to resemble actual famous brand name products. You can hide your jewelry in them. These containers are replicas of the actual product—i.e. cans of food, household cleansers—these can be kept in their obvious locations. A pop can safe can be kept in the fridge with your other pop drinks, or a cleanser product safe, under your sink with other cleansers. These locations are much less conspicuous.

Other clever prop safes are fruits, vegetables, hollow books, stacks of C.D.’s, rocks, planters. One of my favorites is the replica of an electrical outlet that can be screwed into any wall in any room.

These replicas are not expensive and displayed in the appropriate spots where they look natural do not arouse suspicion from a potential thief.

When you go into a jewelry store, some of the most common gemstone combinations you will see are diamonds set with pearls, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

If you are planning to have a custom piece of jewelry made for yourself, think outside the box of what is tradition and consider some spectacular gemstone options.

There is an incredible variety of gemstones that can be combined to create a unique masterpiece. You will be amazed to discover the unbelievable combinations. Look at the colors in your wardrobe and see what combinations you wear that can inspire you.

Clear stones can be combined with opaque or translucent stones. Gemstones that have natural inclusions can be combined with clear stones.

Gemstones of similar colors can be set together to compliment or enhance each other's color, i.e. lime green peridot with emeralds, light blue aquamarine with sky blue topaz, pink tourmaline with rubies.

One of my favorite stones is moonstone. It can be combined with opals and sapphires for a truly magical combination. One of the intriguing features of moonstone is the stone's shimmer--the magical glow that glides across the surface of the stone (a.k.a adularescence) when combined with an opal with its brilliant flashes of color or the sparkle and blue of a sapphire--makes for a stunning and radiant piece of jewelry that will certainly command its fair share of compliments.

Be flamboyant, adventurous, free-spirited and have fun in exploring all the dimensions of gemstones' colors.

There are so many great shows on T.V. that focus on organizing your space and de-cluttering your home. These same principles can certainly apply to the way your jewellery is stored and organized.

The most practical place to store your jewellery is in a jewellery box. Jewellery boxes are designed to accommodate a variety of jewellery with their compartments, hooks and slits.

Depending on the type and amount of jewellery you have, you may find that a simple/basic box will best suit your needs, or you may require a more elaborate one. Sometimes even the largest jewellery cases are not big enough for some jewellery aficionados.

One of our customers always likes to joke that no jewellery box is large enough for her jewellery collection and that if she ever moved, she would need a U-Haul just for her jewellery.

Many jewellery boxes are very decorative and elegant. While it is very common to place them on your dresser, it also is the most accessible target for a would-be thief . Out of sight, out of mind is a wise idea. Try to find a good hiding place where you can keep your jewellery box. The safekeeping of your jewellery is very important and your fine jewellery should not be exposed. Your home may have never been broken into, but that doesn’t eliminate the fact that people still come into your home and can have slippery fingers.

If you do not have a jewellery case, do you find yourself placing your jewellery on or in your dresser drawer, in this or that, scattered around your home? If you answered yes, then you also risk damaging and misplacing your most treasured valuables.

With some ingenuity and creativity, you can make for yourself or give as a gift jewellery containers and stands to properly store and place jewellery. You might surprise yourself with materials you already have at home, or can purchase inexpensively from a second hand/thrift shop, or your local dollar store.
While expensive jewellery needs to be carefully hidden and kept in a safety deposit box or safe, jewellery that you wear every day, or those pieces that are not as valuable might benefit more from some of these crafty storage creations.

Another solution would be to mount a cork board on a wall and also add hooks and knob.
Have fun designing the background and exterior with materials such as small seashells, rocks, twigs, sequins and glitter—express yourself, unleash your creativity and have fun!

If you find a wall mount box with drawers and shelves, perhaps an old spice rack or tools box, you could refinish it and add the necessary hardware to customize it to suit your jewellery collection. As well, if it has a small shelf, you could add a small bowl or ashtray to hold a ring or brooch. Backings for the ideas mentioned above could also include wallpaper or a mirror.

Many jewellery stores sell soft cloth drawstring pouches for individual pieces of jewellery. You can also find small plastic mini zip-loc bags in which you can store jewellery—available in craft/dollar stores. By storing jewellery in individual bags, it will prevent your jewellery from getting scratched or rubbing against each other.

Other items that you can find within your household include tie rack hooks and key holders for chains, watches, rings and bracelets. A mug holder that has branches can have rings slipped on them.

Now if you really want a fun and challenging project, then take wire clothes hangers and untwist them at the top leaving the semi circular hook intact. Use a plier to straighten the wire stem. You can join a cluster together by either putting them into a glass vase or you can curve the base upward, secure it together with a wire so it can stand freely on its own. Hang your chains and bracelets from it. You can also shape a clothes hanger to resemble a multi-level bee hive, to hook your earrings on to. With both these ideas, you can spray paint, wrap ribbon or wool around the wires.

If you come across a vintage or decorative lamp shade that has a unique shape and design, clean it up and decorate it. Add hooks at the top for your chains, beads and bracelets. It would be a unique center piece on your dresser.

Odd pieces of foam can be cut into any shape and then with an exacto knife you can cut slits so that you can place your rings into them. A decorative box can have a piece of foam fitted in and you have an instant ring box.

A scarf or long piece of ribbon can accommodate European back earrings by pulling the earrings through and then by putting a small knot in between each earring to prevent them from rubbing against each other.

Bubble paper can be rolled up like a jelly roll and you can slide your bangle bracelets through it.
If you want to go green, then find thick and long branches, put the branches in a long vase and fill the vase with decorative rocks or glass for stability. You can display your chains and earrings on the branches.

A fun piece that I have seen for rings is a mannequin hand. You might even be able to make one from clay and decorate it.

Your jewellery can also be stored in acrylic jewellery organizers that are designed to hold specific types of jewellery. Some have a stand with a horizontal tube for bracelets and necklaces, while others are multifunctional with drawers and stands.

You know which pieces of your jewellery are irreplaceable, rare, keepsakes, favourites and valuable and should be kept out of sight. Many of these jewellery organizers can be hidden. A safety deposit box or safe are still the most secure places for storing your precious gems. For your less expensive jewellery or the pieces that you wear every day, have fun in creating some of these very practical jewellery containers and stands. Whether their sophisticated, whimsical, or classic in design, they will be functional, aesthetically attractive and will reflect your personality—as unique as your signature.

Creative and Innovative Ways to Gift Wrap Jewelry

Who doesn't love receiving jewellery as a gift? However, if you are the giver and not receiver, I have some suggestions for gift wrapping jewellery that are fun and quite unique, and will certainly put smiles on every one's face.

If you are giving a brooch or pin, attach it to a sweater or scarf. The person receiving it will be so pleasantly surprised to see that they are receiving this beautiful e.g. sweater and then be even more surprised by the complimenting pin.

Why not slip a ring on a pair of gloves. Perhaps the gloves are a part of a hat/scarf set.

If you know someone's favorite brand of wine or champagne, empty the content into another empty bottle, attach a ribbon to a ring or earring, lower it into the bottle and tie the ribbon around the outside of the bottle and wrap it up. When they open it, up, they will be pleasantly surprised--then go fill up your wine/champagne glasses with the reserved drink and have a toast to celebrate.

Coffee lovers will enjoy this one. Empty a canister of coffee beans, slip the jewellery piece in there--make sure the jewellery is in something and refill. Give a complimenting coffee mug with it. This certainly gives a whole new meaning to the expression "coffee never tasted so good"

Take an empty papertowel roll, place the jewellery item in, and place confetti inside and I guarantee there will be a burst of confetti when it is opened.

If you are giving clothing, why not conceal the jewellery item in one of the pockets.

A beautiful plant or fresh cut flowers can conceal jewellery, either by wrapping it within the plant, or actually attaching it to a petal or leaf.

Fill an ice bucket with confetti and place jewellery in it.

For the sweet tooth, slip a ring on a rolled candy and place in a stocking with other candies so it blends in.

Precautions to Take With Your Pearl Jewelry

Your first pearl jewelry, perhaps you received it as a child, or as a young woman, but they have been the building block for your future pearl collection. If you received a pair of pearl stud earrings, you might have added a pearl necklace, bracelet or even a ring over the years. You want them to look as new as the day you first got them.

Maintaining and looking after your pearl jewelry is really quite simple:

When applying certain sprays, i.e. perfume, hairspray, deodorants—wait for a few minutes before putting on your jewelry. As an example, if you applied perfume and then put your pearl necklace on and the perfume was not completely dry, the iridescence, luster and color of the pearl could be altered and would become dull and lifeless overtime.
It is highly advised to have your pearl strand restrung every 1-2 years and to have knots between your pearls. If your stand breaks, your pearls will not be scattered all over and by having a knot in between each pearl bead, they avoid scratching against each other.
It’s best to keep them clean by placing them in mild soapy water and then letting them dry on a towel. If you wear your pearls frequently, wipe them with a soft damp cloth to avoid any kind of chemical build-up.

How To Care For Cameo Jewelry

Cameos, which truly are miniature works of art because of their incredible master craftsmanship, are very fragile. They are prone to cracking and discoloration from age, dryness or elements; they must be carefully cared for and stored.

You should dust your cameos every few months with a soft cloth or soft brush. If dust is accumulated over time, it can cause your cameo to get scratched. When dusting your cameo, pay close attention to the deep ridges where dust can accumulate. After dusting it, you can rinse it with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.

Once a year, apply a little mineral oil lightly with a cotton swab to the front and back of your SHELL cameo and leave it on for several hours before wiping if off. The mineral oil helps prevent discoloration, change of color and prevents it from becoming dry or cracked.

How to Care For Your Marcasite Jewelry

The beauty of marcasite stones, which were very popular during the Victorian era, is their grey to almost black color as well as their sparkle and flash in light. Today, you often see marcasites in vintage-inspired jewelry as well as authentic antique/vintage pieces.

Popular combinations for marcasite are hematite and mother mother-of-pearl set in silver or white gold because of their appealing combination.

Since marcasite is commonly set with jeweler’s glue or cement, they should not get wet in order to prevent the stone from getting loose. How often I have heard "I know in my imagination what I want, I can picture it, but I can't get it down on paper".

This is a pretty common expression by consumers who desire to design a custom piece of jewelry for themselves. They try sketching and then when they hit a roadblock, get frustrated and give up all attempts at creating their dream jewel.

Well I have good news; you do not need to be an artist to be inspired. You need creative channels to inspire you towards the end result, which is your ideal custom design special piece.

So where do you begin, where is the starting point?

Look through fashion and jewelry magazines. You may notice a certain setting that is exactly what you want, while in another publication, you may see the right shank - call it a hodge podge of designs or as my Hungarian background would say, a good goulash.

In other words, you can see bits and pieces of features that appeal to you and can be executed into one design.

I can tell you one thing, designing the specific piece is not done overnight, it can take weeks, months and even years.

As you begin to cut out pictures, store them in a scrap book and as you come across more pictures just keep adding them to your collection. Other designs may appeal to you and you may change your mind numerous times.

If you don't collect magazines, then your computer will be your other best source. As you find pieces that appeal to you, bookmark them or print them up.

Let's say you are interested in a sporty ring. Google, "sporty rings", it will yield multitudes of pages which you can print up and collect.

Has your library card been gathering some dust? You will have a pleasant surprise when you visit your local library and see their collection of books on jewelry.

You have to decide what style, type and era of jewelry you are looking for. If you want your jewelry to be inspired from a certain time period, you may explore books that focus on a certain genre or style, i.e. Modernistic, Art Deco or Victorian.

Carrying a small camera or your phone's camera can often capture the right picture at the perfect moment.

You may see a person wearing an extraordinary piece of jewelry, or you may pass a jewelry shop window and see a piece that attracts you - you can instantly capture it all with a single click. Your camera can also capture images of objects, animals, foliage, landscapes - anything that can inspire a shape, theme or color.

If you travel to different countries you can be influenced by their own jewelry designs. So many countries have their own distinctive design concepts - you will definitely want to capture those on film.

Now if you can draw a little, then buy a good sketch paid and when a creative moment strikes you, fill that pad with shapes and textures. You may have bursts of ingenious creativity use those moments passionately and let the creativity in you flow.

Carry a small notebook with you because you never known when a creative idea hits you - it can be a thought, image or a word.

Think of words that are associated with the theme or type of jewelry you wish to have designed. Descriptive words evoke images, patterns, shapes and shades.

As an example, if you are a boater, the words associated with that are speed, nautical, adventurous, waves, compass and buoys.

Keywords that would describe a swimmer include wind, water, athletic, strength and endurance, movement, flowing and graceful. When you look at these words, you can visualize shapes, lines and textures which can be incorporated into your design.

If you are looking at designing an initial, name, or expression, look at various types of fonts or calligraphy books or sites.

When you are researching the area / subject that focuses on your jewelry, pull out detailed information, choosing only the most significant feature(s) so that as the design evolves, it becomes that much more exact and detailed.

You have a starting point from which to begin; from there you can add, take away, substitute, analyze until it is the way you vision it.

Don't miss out on an opportunity to purchase a chain if do see a spectacular one on one of your travels, you may regret later on not buying it. One of my customers, while she was single travelled a lot. One summer she spent travelling through Europe and discovered the beautiful jewelry of Florence, Italy. She saw a beautiful chain and while it was very affordable, she was undecided about purchasing it since she didn't want to part with all her cash. Fast forward several years and today she REGRETS that she didn't buy it. "I haven't seen a chain like it since, why was I so narrow minded", says Caroline.

You may wish to invest in a simple chain for everyday and a more decorative one for special occasions.

With vacation around the corner for many people, I wanted to share some suggestions and ideas for safeguarding your jewelry while you are travelling. Taking precautions to minimize loss or theft of your jewelry is very important.

There are two groups of travelers: the minimalist who packs just a few key pieces and then there is the opposite, call this person Maxie, who brings everything. This also applies with jewelry. Some travelers will not wear any jewelry, or if they do, it would be something inexpensive and simple, while others will not part with any of their jewelry.

I am always so surprised to see so many ladies wearing their most expensive diamond jewelry when they are on the beach, or wearing so much gold when I travel to beach destination vacations. Many of these beautiful and tropical beaches are in 3rd world countries where the poverty is very high. Do you know who they are going to look at for their livelihood? Bingo!

If you are heading to any beach during the summer months, a wise idea would be to not wear any jewelry, especially rings because the only person who will be laughing to the bank will be the person who is scouring the beaches with his metal detector. Suntan lotion makes your fingers slippery and rings can slip off easily as well as swimming in the cold ocean, lakes, rivers--your fingers shrink and your rings will slide off.

Tourists who wear a lot of jewelery stand out and are a potential target. Your safety is more important than wearing your blinfg bling. I cannot stress it enough, that when you travel, please keep it simple. I love my jewelry, but when I travel, I am the minimalist. I wear only my wedding band, a simple pair of gold hoop earings and a plastic watch. Blending in with the locals and not drawing attention to yourself can sometimes be a challenge. In some countries, I definitely would not blend in since I am blond and almost 6 feet in height.

On the flip side, for those who choose to travel with their jewels, while in transit, keep your jewelry in your handbag or carry-on bag. If you are a frequent traveler, i.e. business traveler, you may wish to invest in a traveling jewelry case because they have the proper compartments that keep your jewelry organized and protected. One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a travel case is how much jewelry and what type of jewelry you will be traveling with since there are so many different types available. You want to make sure you purchase the appropriate type.

When staying at a hotel, a wise idea would be to keep your jewelry in the hotel's safety deposit box or in your room's safe. It is also advisable to take copies of sales receipts, appraisal certificates or insurance papers as proof of ownership; by doing so, you will avoid any potential problems with customs with regards to import taxes and customs declarations.

There are many reasons why people wear vintage jewelry; perhaps they inherited it, it has sentimental value, they are drawn to the design of a certain era, i.e. Art Deco, they are looking for unusual pieces, they want to own and wear a piece of history, etc. Many collector's feel a connection to their family history. There are those that only collect a certain type of jewelry, i.e. watches, rings, lavalieres because they might have a favorite maker or designer.

There are those collector's who will travel, within reason of course, to find or acquire the right piece. So often there are vintage/antique markets located out of town, auctions where you will see the "regulars" week by week, month by month, year by year--depending how often they have events or are open.

A recent comment I heard from a lady about her passion for collecting antique jewelry was because it gave her the chance to express her unique personality. She said that her jewelry collection represented her.

Quite often when one inherits or is given a piece of jewelry from the past, this is the beginning of their collection, especially when they truly adore the piece. Others just discover it on chance. It could be as simple as walking by a jewelry store that has an estate section, a piece captures your eye and you are hooked.

With today's high price of gold, investing in an heirloom piece is wise, since the value will go up with time. Do your homework before purchasing an expensive piece. Make sure the the gemstone and metal are in good condition, that there are maker's markings, karat markings. Ask for a professional appraisal.

This magnificent citrine necklace was originally a brooch and the former owner did not wear it too often. The Importance of Photographing Your Jewelry

Whether your jewelry is sentimental, an heirloom piece or very valuable, having up to date pictures of them and hiding the pictures is very important for the following reasons:

When you are purchasing extra insurance for your jewelry, most insurance companies will request that each piece (especially if it is a very valuable jewel) be accompanied with a professional appraisal and picture.

If you went out for the afternoon with a friend for lunch and know you had on your vintage gold bracelet when you left the house, and upon returning home, you noticed it was missing from your wrist, a picture of it would certainly make it easier to distribute photocopies, fliers, within your community.

Now if you had a break-in, and your jewelry was stolen, you certainly would not be in the frame of mind to accurately describe each piece that was missing. You might not even be able to remember all the pieces that were stolen. With pictures, law officials would be able to track them down easier, especially if they apprehended the thief(s) or if they turned up at a pawn. shop.

If your jewelry cannot be found from the above scenarios, with a good picture, you could have them replaced with similar or identical pieces.

A few years ago, one of our customers had a very high strung puppy who was very oral. Besides the numerous holes in the walls, chewed furniture legs--this puppy also had expensive taste. If you ever have to sell your jewelry, remember that expression, "a picture is worth a thousand words"--the more detailed, the more close-ups, the clearer the picture, the easier it will be to sell. You want a potential buyer to almost be able to touch it and to get excited about it which can result in selling your piece(s) faster.

You need not go out to purchase an expensive camera. If your camera has a 10x optical zoom, that will do the job. Or if you do not have one, perhaps you can ask your friends if they have one.

When taking the pictures, make sure that they are taken in natural sunlight to capture the true colors of the gemstones, as well as taking shots from every angle.

If you have a safety deposit box or home safe, keep the pictures locked up. If not, then find a very good hiding place within your home.

If you are planning to purchase a piece of jewelry, whether its custom made or store purchased, there are numerous settings that gems are set into and knowing a little about them can help you in making the right choice when purchasing your purchase. Some stones benefit from one type of setting, while the beauty of another stone might not suit a particular setting. The list below highlights the more common settings.

Prong/claw settings are the most common settings that are on the market. The metal has tips that secure and hold the stone in place. Average number of prongs is 4, but 6 and 8 is fairly common--usually dependent on stone size.

Bezel settings stones are placed within a setting and have a slightly raised "collar" with the metal wrapped around it.

Channel settings are usually seen in bands where there is a small 'channel' carved and the stones are very tightly set beside each other. Stones are flush with the setting.

There are so many different ring styles available today, and the names of some of these rings might not be familiar to the average consumer. So here is a list of some of the more common ring styles to help you when you are looking for a particular type of ring.

Posy/Posey Rings - are bands that have an inscription on the outside or inside of the diameter of the ring. Quite often they are romantic expressions, i.e. wedding band, friendship band.

Dinner Ring - I like to refer to these as Statement Rings - they are usually large rings, worn on their own and are set with a large gem, or many gems. Definitely a conversation piece!

Bands - When you think of band, it is commmon to think of wedding bands, but today, bands can signify many things - friendship, promise, commitment, sporty ring. You can wear bands in multiples as stacking rings.

Eternity Ring - Commonly referred to as a diamond eternity ring. The diamonds are set on the top or all the way around a band.

Solitaire - A single stone set on its own - e.g. a diamond solitaire, or any gemstone stone that is solo.

Cluster - A cluster of small gems that are set close together.

If you are planning to invest in a quality piece of diamond jewelry, are you aware that there are several things that need to be considered before your final purchase? The four key "C's to consider are: color, clarity, carat and cut.

Cut: How a diamond is cut is vital to its brilliance and reflective factor. Make sure that you are looking at a diamond either in natural sunlight or in an very well lit area. Observe how the light enters the stone and reflects back. When a diamond is cut proportionatley, light entering from the top will reflect from one facet to another and then will bounce outward. A good quality diamond will show a sparkling reflective surface and this is when you see that incredible fire, known as brilliance.

Color: While fancy diamonds (naturally occurring colorful diamonds) are rare, the average consumer purchases the transparent/colorless diamond. Fancy diamonds range in color from red, blue, yellow, pink and purple. These diamonds also command a very high price. Colorless diamonds allow more light through which = more sparkle and fire. The highest rating for such a diamond is D. The most valuable diamonds are rated D to F. The scale rates color down to Z.

Clarity: Is the stone clear or does it have flaws or cloudy areas? It is rare to find a diamond that has no flaws, since most of them do. Small minute crystals are called inclusions. Inclusions affect the beauty and value of a diamond. If there are many inclusions that can be seen with the naked eye, then it is a poor quality stone with less sparkle, while a stone with minute inclusions that can be noticed with a jeweler's loop has more sparkle and value. Diamonds that are perfect are graded as IF = internally flawless, VVS1-VVS2, very very small inclusions, VS1-VS2, very small inclusions, SI1-SI2 - small inclusions, I1,I2, I3-visible numerous inclusions.

Carat - This refers to the weight of the diamond. For example 100 pts = 1 carat, 75 pts = 3/4 carat, 50 pts = 1/2 carat, 25 pts= 1/4 carat.

If you have a set budget, rather invest in quality than size. Down the road, you can always upgrade to a larger diamond, or even add more diamonds if the design allows.

Several years ago one of our customers purchased a beautiful 1/2 carat diamond engagement ring--it was exquisite. On their 5th wedding anniversary, we remodelled the ring by adding smaller diamonds giving the ring a 1 carat total weight in diamonds. It went from 1/2 a carat to a full carat with VVS quality diamonds--not to mention its value on today's market.

You have heard the expression "buyer beware". When you are on vacation and venture out to shop, especially for jewelry, there are a few key things that you need to be aware in order to make sure that you are safe and that you are not being ripped off.

Purchasing from a street/beach vendor does not guarantee that you are going to get a "bargain" in some cases people have paid much more from these vendors than if they would have purchased it from a reputable store. Also, there is no guarantee that the item is genuine. Sterling silver can be stamped 925, but could be metal. Also, the gemstone could be a simulated stone.
Do purchase your jewelry from a reputable store that has a return policy for merchandise that can be returned in a reasonable amount of time for a full refund, not a store credit if you are not satisfied with it.
Be aware of "deals". If the price is too good, be cautious.
When entering a jewelry shop make sure that no one follows you in or follows you out.
Never shop alone.
When making a purchase, especially an expensive piece, don't put it on to wear out of the store. You do not need to draw attention to yourself.
Be a good negotiator. Try to get the best bang for your buck. Even the finest jewelry shop will have some flexibility in price.

Unique Ideas for Personalizing Jewelry

You may own a piece of jewelry with only your name, initials or medical information engraved on it. There are other unique things that you can engrave when giving someone a very special piece of jewelery. When giving such a gift to someone, it shows that a great deal of thought went into it.

When a couple gets married, many have the date of their marriage engraved on the inside of their wedding bands. For couples that are not married, you can still present your loved one with a piece of jewelry that has engraved the date you met, your first year anniversary, when you got engaged or any other milestone in your relationship.

Besides dates and initials, you can also engrave a favorite expression, quote, word, number or symbol. If you and someone special share a loving phrase and it is too long, why not take the first letter of each word and have it engraved on a treasured piece of jewelry.

One of our customers recently had the inscription "You Are The Love of My Life" engraved inside a bracelet for his girlfriend and had it shortened to U.R.T (heart symbol) O.M.L.

For couples getting married, you might consider engraving a religious verse inside your wedding band.

You can also engrave a nickname, especially if it is an endearing one.

For mother's, you can give individual charms, or circular discs, or hearts with the names of each child on it. There are also link bracelets available that have large links on which names or expressions can be engraved on each one.

The Difference Between "Man-Made" and "Synthetic" Gemstones

Often the average consumer interchangeably uses the words man-made/simulated and synthetic gems thinking that it means the same, however, there are significant differences between the two.

The Egyptians were the first to produce man-made gems from glass. While the term man-made is commonly used, the term simulated gems means the same thing. These laboratory created gems look like the actual stone, especially in color, but do not have the characteristics of a genuine gemstone, i.e. crystal structure, stone hardness, natural inclusions. These stones are usually made from plastic or glass. A good example would be cubic zirconia which is a good impostor for genuine diamonds.

Synthetic gemstones, while they imitate the color of the actual gemstone, also have the similar characteristics of the gems. These characteristics include having the exact same crystal structure, transparency, natural inclusions, optical and chemical properties.

Until the proper equipment was developed to test the genuine from the fake, it was difficult even for seasoned gemologists and jewelers to differentiate. Today, there are sophisticated tools to distinguish the real from the faux.

As an example, we have a tool that we use to distinguish a cubic zirconia from a diamond. When it emits a small beep upon touching the surface of a diamond, we know that it is definitely 'a girl's best friend'. When a skeptical young lady comes in to have her diamond tested and the tester does not emit a sound, my message is, "boyfriend, you better start running for the hills'.

Garnet is the Birthstone for January

January's birthstone is the garnet, and while most people are familiar with the common rich red color of garnets, they do come in a variety of colors--green, orange, yellow brown, pink . Some of the other classifications for garnets would be pyrope, almandine, spessartite, demantoid.

The word garnet means "seed-like" and comes from the latin name 'Granatus".

Garnet jewelery can be worn everyday because they have a hardness of 7 - 7 1/2 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.

When purchasing garnet jewellery, color will determine the value of the gem. The brighter the gem, the higher the price. Also, make sure that the stone is clear with not many inclusions--this also affects the value of the stone.

Legend has it that Noah used a garnet for illumination for the arc. As well, when someone wore garnet in the evening, it allowed the wearer to see things that others couldn't see.

Best way to clean garnet is with warm soapy water and a very soft brush.

Use Caution When Travelling With Jewellery

Having just returned from a two week Christmas vacation from a 'beach resort', I was so surprised to see the number of ladies wearing their expensive and sparkling diamond jewellery as well as heavy gold chains and bracelets. While for most of us our jewellery is like our second skin when travelling, you are taking all sorts of chances and risks when you are wearing your jewellery--potentially losing them, standing out in the crowd and risking your safety.

In so many of these communities, the locals are constantly begging for money whether you are walking along the beach or in the downtown core. While it is heartbreaking to see people living in the conditions that they do, for them, it is also about daily survival. Tourists are their golden opportunity and if you stand out, you are an easy target.

I leave all my jewellery at home with the exception of my gold wedding band and a cheap $9.00 watch--those are the only two pieces that I wear.

Blending in with the other tourists and locals is key--you do not want to stand out and attract attention to yourself. If you wear flashy jewellery you are are projecting an image of wealth and taking risks for your safety.

Last year, one of my customers was walking downtown while on vacation and she felt perfectly safe, until a local woman came up behind her and tried pulling off her 2 carat diamond ring. She screamed and struggled and it scared off the assailant and salvaged her ring, but she was devastated by the experience.

Did you know that many people also lose their jewellery while on vacation - suntan lotion can make rings slip off and when you go swimming in the cold ocean, your fingers shrink and your rings will slide off.

I don't want to scare any one, just to make you aware. Going on a vacation is wonderful, but by taking certain precautions, you will minimize the risk of being a target and ensuring your safety.

The Gift of Giving All Year Round - Making A Difference in Someone's Life

At this time of the year, you see so many gracious and kind hearted people volunteering to raise money for so many organizations that help the poor, sick and needy worldwide.

Whether I go grocery shopping or to the mall, I recognize the same faces each year. These wonderful volunteers want to make a difference by giving their time and hoping to help raise awareness of just how much help these organizations need in order to help the world's less fortunate.

Last year, as I was finishing my Christmas shopping, and heading towards the exit, there was a large booth set up, and while I cannot remember the name of the organization, I stopped to look at the brochures and to speak with one of the volunteers. As I was looking through the brochure, what caught my attention was a heading that read "Buy Two Chickens and a Rooster and You Will Make a Woman Self-Sufficient in Africa".

As I read the description and spoke to the woman, I knew that my donation was going to help a single mother in Africa with several children, become independent and self sufficient. She would be able to sell the eggs at the market, while also having her chickens "procreate" for the growth of her business. With time, she would also be able to sell chickens at the market.

That was truly a remarkable experience and I intend to look for the same booth this year at the mall.

While for some people, giving a financial donation is difficult, especially during these hard times, you can also donate your time and brighten someones day.

My son has befriended a blind elderly lady at an old age home not too far from our house. Cameron absolutely enjoys his time with her because she has so many stories to tell and he makes her laugh. God bless her, because she lost her sight from a stroke that she had, but her mind is sharp and she enjoys the companionship those few hours each week. He is making a difference in her life and will continue to visit her long after the holidays are over.

At Christmas time we are reminded of how important it is to remember, to give, to help, to reach out, to make a difference in some one's life. My life is so blessed and I give thanks to God everyday for my blessings. While I give to more charities during the Christmas season, I also give year round when anyone asks for a donation and have instilled the same values in my children.

Last winter, my husband and I had a date and went downtown. Before we left, my daughter Julia reminded me that if I saw a homeless person that I should buy him/her a cup of coffee. She knows her mother too well. That evening when we came home, the first thing she asked me was if I bought a coffee for a needy person.

I went on to say "Julia, there were two gentlemen lying on the cold sidewalk in sleeping bags and I bought them both a warm breakfast" and that both gentlemen said "God Bless You". She was overjoyed that I helped not one, but two homeless people.

Yes, children certainly emulate their parents, but I must confess that there have been a couple of occasions when I have had to tell my daughter not to be that kind hearted...like the time she gave away her brand new Littlest Pet Shop Toys, to her friend because "Mommy, she liked them", or the time her other friend was coming down the stairs clutching a $20.00 bill, "Julia gave it to me".

God love them.....

Innovative Ways to Gift Wrap Jewellery

If you are giving a brooch or pin, attach it to a sweater or scarf. The person receiving it will be so pleasantly surprised to see that they are receiving this beautiful e.g. sweater and then be even more surprised by the complimenting pin.

Why not slip a ring on a pair of gloves. Perhaps the gloves are a part of a hat/scarf set.

If you know someone's favorite brand of wine or champagne, empty the content into another empty bottle, attach a ribbon to a ring or earring, lower it into the bottle and tie the ribbon around the outside of the bottle and wrap it up. When they open it, up, they will be pleasantly surprised--then go fill up your wine/champagne glasses with the reserved drink and have a toast to celebrate.

Coffee lovers will enjoy this one. Empty a canister of coffee beans, slip the jewellery piece in there--make sure the jewellery is in something and refill. Give a complimenting coffee mug with it. This certainly gives a whole new meaning to the expression "coffee never tasted so good"

Take an empty papertowel roll, place jewellery item in, and place confetti inside and I guarantee there will be a burst of confetti when it is opened.

If you are giving clothing, why not conceal the jewellery item in one of the pockets.

A beautiful plant or fresh cut flowers can conceal jewellery, either by wrapping it within the plant, or actually attaching it to a petal or leaf.

Fill an ice bucket with confetti and place jewellery in it.

For the sweet tooth, slip a ring on a rolled candy and place in a stocking with other candies so it blends in.

I recall when my parents had their retail jewellery store and parents, grandparents and godparents would come in to purchase dainty little pearl stud earrings. As a small child, I could not appreciate the significance of such a purchase for a little girl or young woman.

Almandine garnets have a pink/red hue, spessartites are orange to red-brown, grossulars range from green, yellow to copper-brown, demantoids are green, while uvarovite are emerald green.

Accessorizing with layers of chains or beads is one of the most hottest looks this season and one that will be around for a while.

Vision a simple black or white T-shirt and how it will explode with style when you add layers of necklaces to it. You have transformed it from plain to magnificent. You could achieve the same look with a turtle neck or closed shirt.

I personally love the look and feel of chains/beads against skin. It definitely projects a different look, one of sexiness, playfulness or 5 star elegance.

Here are some ideas on how to achieve some unique layering looks:

Chains can be layered at varying lengths, i.e. choker, mid length and long dangling. If your chains are similar in thickness/width, it would flow very nicely. Wearing an assortment of textures, i.e. simple fine chain, medium link chain, large wide chain, would give another unique look.

You can wear the same metal colors together, i.e. gold with gold, silver with silver, or mix and match both. The advantage of mixing is that the rest of your jewellery can be mixed and match too. You could add a silver pair of earrings, while your rings are gold.

To break up the look of the chains, you can add a strand of beads to add color to a matching outfit. So playing with that suggestion, lets say you have a short necklace, add mid length beads and a then a longer chain. Or, mid length chain and long beads--the ideas are endless.

Layering with pendants is another unique look. Imagine beads mixed with pendants, or a couple of simple chains and then a WOW pendant added with a long chain.

Theme layering is also quite unique, i.e. if you have necklaces that have certain designs, i.e. floral, constellation (moon/stars), romance (hearts), animals, could create a unique look.

Mix vintage and antique pieces together with contemporary pieces for another look from another era.

Pearls are always a wonderful accent because of their classic look since pearls can be worn with every outfit for every occasion.

If you can, try to plan ahead the look you want to achieve. Look at what you are going to wear and then see what works with the garment. You don't want to create a 'thrown together' look, unless you want a Bohemian look, then go ahead :)

Reinventing the Charm Bracelet - A New Way to Wear Them

My dearest and most treasured first piece of jewelery was my childhood charm bracelet. I remember receiving the bracelet with a chewed little gold heart (the heart was a pendant that I wore all the time as a very small child--you can see in the pictures the rough surface--first day of school is to blame--separation anxiety from my mother :( . The other charm that accompanied my bracelet, was my first tooth, which my father encased in a bezel setting.

As the years passed, each charm that I received reflected my individuality and what and where I was going in my life. A few that you can see are a ballerina, boat, Christmas tree, and the most recent one, Mother.

No two charm bracelets are alike and that is what makes them as unique as your signature.

My charm bracelet was not worn for many years because it got caught in things and jingled too much.

I missed wearing it because of the personal history behind it and because it was such a sentimental and endearing piece--charms given to me by my parents.

One day as I was admiring it, a light went on in my head--a brainstorm, a great idea--that would allow me to wear it again, in its fully glory!

I had the bracelet transformed into a charm necklace. Originally when I had it modified, I took a simple gold necklace, had my father cut it in half, and each half was soldered to both ends of the bracelet.

After several years of wearing it this way, I once again, wanted to update its look--the result can be seen in the photos above.

For many years, I wore my vintage choker round link necklace on its own. This time, the charms were removed and individually added to the links on my choker.

You can see how elegant and classic this piece looks. It has given my charms a whole new dimension, as well as new necklace for me. Not to mention, that I have a new gold bracelet, charm free, which is now going to be given to my little girl, for her to begin her own collection.

Best Hungarian Meat Loaf Recipe

Being of Hungarian descent, I love cooking at least 1 or 2 good Hungarian meals a week for my family. Hungarian food is rich in flavour and definitely a foodies experience. We use a lot of sweet red pepper powder, as well as onions and garlic for flavour. The recipe I am sharing is my mother's and is so popular with friends that when there is any kind of get together, my mother doesn't ask what to bring--she automatically makes her infamous meat loaf.

Ingredients:
3 pounds of combo--ground veal/ground pork/ground beef
2 large onions - diced
6 cloves of garlic - minced
Chicken Powder Mix - i.e. - Knorr - 2 tablespoons
Dash of Salt
1 large egg
1 Mild Hungarian Kielbasa
Bread Crumbs

Combine and mix the first 6 ingredients. Insert into a loaf pan or something similar in shape. Before inserting meatloaf, sprinkle bread crumbs on the bottom of pan.

Make an incision into the center of the meatloaf to place the Kielbasa in the center and then smooth out.

Sprinkle bread crumbs on top of meatloaf.

Bake at 350 until completely done.

The meatloaf has such a rich smokey flavour.

I serve it with mashed potatoes, vegetables and a salad.

The beauty of this dish, is that you can slice the meat loaf for sandwiches. It's deliriously delicious.

If you really want a fun and challenging project, then take wire clothes hangers and untwist them at the top leaving the semi circular hook intact. Use a plier to straighten the wire stem. You can join a cluster together by either putting them into a glass vase or you can curve the base upward, secure it together with a wire so it can stand freely on its own. Hang your chains and bracelets from it. You can also shape a clothes hanger that resembles a multi-level bee hive, to hook your earrings on to. With both these ideas, you can spray paint, wrap ribbon or wool around the wires.

If you come across a vintage or decorative lamp shade that has a unique shape and design, then clean it up and decorate it. Add hooks at the top for your chains, beads and bracelets. It would be a unique center piece on your dresser.

Odd pieces of foam can be cut into any shape and then with an exacto knife you can cut slits so that you can place your rings into them. A decorative box can have a piece of foam fitted in and you have an instant ring box.

It has now come full circle and I am so proud to “unveil” the Positivity=Prosperity Ring and Positivity=Prosperity Pendant/Brooch.

The journey for these two inspirational pieces of wearable art began with a thought, followed by a spiritual message. This vision was followed by numerous sketches, which my father, N. Gatter, an Artisan Jeweler, made into a reality. This dual collaboration has truly been a family affair. My father and I put our hearts and souls into these creations that we hope will bring as much joy to the wearer as it has to us in designing and making the positivity=prosperity jewelry.

When the ring or brooch are worn and as you carry about your daily activities, your inner dialogue, and mind set should reflect the new you - I am empowered for greatness. Today is a new day and nothing and no one is going to get in my way. I walk proudly and hold my head up high. I am positive, strong, energized and confident and can accomplish all. Everything came full circle as I found the perfect symbol. This symbol represents birth, growth, maturity, change, new beginnings and freshness—a leaf. Leaves epitomize “new beginnings” with each new season as they start off as a bud and then “grow” and “change” as they reach “full maturity”.

From a historical perspective, leaves such as the four leaf clover or shamrock represent fame, wealth, abundance, happiness, good luck. For those that desire change, a leaf represents “turning over a new leaf”.

The heart shaped leaf epitomizes the grace and beauty of all that is symbolic of a heart and leaf. Call it the perfect union—a marriage made in heaven.

The leaf had still not come full circle since I had to find a way to embed the letter “P” within the leaf. Again, it had to be a natural part of the leaf, but also had to stand out. As I was sketching out various “P’s”, I finally hit the nail on the head. The straight line of the “P” is the primary vein in the center, while at the same time, the letter is raised to stand out.

There is a symbol in the world that reaches all cultures. Its meaning is universal, it knows no boundaries and it brings people together—the heart. The heart, as we all know, represents love. It also signifies compassion, graciousness, kindness, joy and is the core of our emotions. There are also expressions of the heart that we use when we want to amplify an endearment about or referring to someone—“giving heart”, “heart of gold”, “good hearted”, “good hearted laugh”.

The framework of my design was definitely centered on the heart, yet I wanted to incorporate within the heart something that reflected change—a new beginning. It had to be something that was naturally occurring and flowed harmoniously—it had to be the perfect balance, but most importantly, it had to be representative of nature.

For many months I spent countless hours thinking of the type of piece I wanted to design—it had to be a piece that was not only attractive but inspirational in that it would remind the wearer to focus on the beauty of life, living to your full potential and having a positive attitude.

The answer came from a higher source. One day I woke up with two words in my mind—positivity equals prosperity. Why these two words? For the past several months I’ve spoken to so many people that have been affected by the current global crises. As well, every time I open the newspaper or watch the news, the words are so powerfully negative—recession, economic hardships, unemployment, foreclosures, depression, anxiety and sleeplessness.

Now for someone who practices positive affirmations everyday, who is upbeat, happy and always smiles (and no I don’t live in Disneyland) I had enough of the daily negative reminders. We get it, we know!!

How we handle, react and accept things are keys to our emotional and spiritual well being. As well, our inner dialogue or self-talk is the key to how we handle and react to situations. Have you ever noticed that when you think of something that brings you joy, recall a happy event or think of a single word that is positive, you feel good and most likely have a smile on your face and calmness may come upon you?

Three of my favorite words are sunshine, blessings and positive. These words are spoken or thought of interchangeably everyday depending on the situation.

The world needs a shake-up to get out of this negative mind set. When you are positive you are prosperous in all areas of your life—relationships, health, work, emotions, etc. We cannot control what is happening in the world, but we certainly can take charge of our mind set and change the way we think, react and accept things in our lives. Being positive is a state of mind and the world needs to embrace a new way of thinking in order to change all the negative energy. You can dramatically improve the quality of your life especially your health.

I truly believe in my heart that these words positivity equals prosperity, are an inspiration from a higher source. I believe we can all find an inspiration in our hearts if we truly reach out, but also reflect within ourselves.

Being positive is a state of mind and the world needs to embrace a new way of thinking in order to bring about positive changes. When you are positive in your thought, attitude and actions you are prosperous in all areas of your life.

I wanted to capture in my design the essence of my thoughts that would uplift one’s spirit, re-energize the psyche, change the inner dialogue and mind set so that when one wore this piece the words positivity equals prosperity would be their reminder to think, react, act positively, but most importantly to believe in themselves that they can make a positive difference in their lives by focusing on only the good.

While a wedding band is symbolically worn on the 4th finger of the left or right hand--you certainly are not "married" or limited how you can wear these rings.

Acquiring a small band that securely fits your baby finger is a classic look. I have seen numerous people wear bands on their opposite hand and quite often that is
all they wear on that hand. For some individuals, it might be a treasured and beloved inherited ring that once belonged to someone very special.

The classic tri-color puzzle band is another popular ring that many people wear on their pinky--some actually buy it for that purpose.

If you have a band that does not fit your pinky, why not wear it as a pendant by simply putting a chain through it.

You can also modify the band by adding diamonds and recreating it as an eternity band. If you have a plain gold band, this newly revitalized diamond band would be a beautiful complimenting ring beside your existing gold band.

Depending on the size of the band, you could have a gemstone or initial set in the center, a bale added and worn as a pendant.

If the band is wide enough, you could have it sawn in half. You could keep one for yourself, and give the other half to a loved one. You could also wear one on your wedding finger, and the other half on a pinky. As well, add diamonds to the one half.

An experienced jeweler can work wonders in revitalizing an older band.

Making a Statement with a "Statement Necklace"

A substantial neckpiece, or "statement necklace", is a necklace that you wear only on its own. They have so much detailing, can be substantial in size, very decorative and ornate, can be worn at varyings length by adding an extra jump ring.

Wear them over bare skin with an open shirt, or over a closed turtle neck, or button down shirt. Wear them with a beautiful evening gown or cocktail dress.

Depending on the design, do not wear overpowering earrings--keep the earrings simple as the eyes will be drawn away from the neckpiece.
